Always efficient, the Electric Power Steering system replaced the conventional hydraulic power-steering system with an electric motor. And while hydraulic systems are always drawing power from the engine, the power needed for our Electric Power Steering system actually comes from the battery. Our Electric Power Steering system is also only activated when actually needed. Plus, if the steering wheel isn’t moved at all, the electric motor remains inactive, which reduces power consumption and increases efficiency.

To supply a battery with electrical energy, the generator (alternator) is usually driven using engine power, which requires fuel. With Brake Energy Regeneration, the alternator produces electricity when the driver brakes or takes a foot off the accelerator. Kinetic energy that was previously unharnessed is transformed into electrical energy, then fed into the battery. In this way, electricity is generated without consuming fuel.

The 8-Speed Automatic Transmission Steptronic system actually makes efficiency audible with its smooth and quick gear changes. Closer spacing between the additional gears reduces the engine’s rev interval between shifts meaning the gear-changes are hardly noticeable. And at higher speeds, the eighth gear reduces the number of revolutions per minute ensuring an overall quieter and more fuel-efficient ride.

Electronic Damping Control lets you easily switch between the NORMAL, SPORT or SPORT+ gear settings with just the push of a button. Using the data collected by sensors, the Electronic Damping Control calculates the best setting for each individual wheel and continually adjusts its suspension accordingly.

Head-Up Display projects the current speed or navigation directions in your field of vision, so you’ll never have to take your eyes off the road. The image is projected onto the front windshield and is always visible. Important warnings as well as the selected speed of the Dynamic Cruise control are always easily seen.

Our innovative camera system makes both parking and driving easier and safer. The rear view camera—used when backing up and maneuvering into tight spots—shows you what’s behind your car on the iDrive screen. And the Top View camera uses the data collected from the rear view camera to give you a bird’s eye view of your X3 and its surroundings.

Unlike other all-wheel-drive systems, we've built ours with rear wheel bias for surefooted grip on slick roads, without sacrificing the feel of rear wheel drive. It smartly sends power to the wheel or wheels with the surest footing - and it does so in milliseconds. That means under normal conditions, drive forces are spread out with a rear-wheel bias. But the moment the system senses excessive wheel slip, it subtly shifts torque to meet the changing conditions, offering maximum available traction and superior handling on all surfaces.
